We talk to Kawaii Besu!

At Midwest Media Expo 2015, we got a chance to talk to Kawaii Besu, an amazing professional cosplayer from the west coast. While she was amazingly busy at the convention, we did get a moment to chat her up!

For those that don’t know of you, can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Beth
I’m Beth of Kawaii Besu Cosplay. “Kawaii Besu” is a play on words of the Japanese phrase “kawaii desu” which means “it’s cute,” so think of my name as “Beth’s cute!” I tend to make a lot of cosplays from anime, so I thought this name suited me well! I started cosplaying in 2008 but I’ve been making costumes for school projects unnamedand holidays as far back as I can remember. I’ve also done some fashion modeling which has helped a lot with cosplay posing!
A few other facts about me… My dad is Jon St. John, the voice actor who voices Duke Nukem. I once had a tiny role on a reality tv show and it was so much fun watching myself on the air! I’m a realist oil painter and was trained at University of California San Diego.

What’s got you into cosplay in the first place?

Beth

I worked a gig at Comic Con San Diego and was allowed to dress up in costume! I actually didn’t know that I was “cosplaying” until I learned the term later. My first costume was Emma Frost from X-Men and was made mostly out of found items. Now, I pride myself in my craftsmanship and try to hand make as much of my costume as possible!

mattmagician

Do you have a particularly favorite costume that you’ve shown?

Beth

So far my favorites are Morrigan unnamed (1)Aensland from Darkstalkers and Asuka Shikinami from Neon Genesis Evangelion. Morrigan’s wings were a huge challenge, but eventually I got them to look exactly as I’d hoped! Asuka’s plugsuit was also especially difficult, but in the end I was so happy that I had taken the project on.

Midwest Media Expo 2015 was your first MME, any memorable moments?

Beth
So many memorable moments!! I hosted my first panel, participated in my first cosplay contest, celebrity roasted my dad, and made some amazing new friends! It was so much fun and I hope I’ll be able to go again next year!

mattmagician
You roasted your dad, wearing a Big the Cat outfit, just to make the burn a little more real. How was that?

Beth

Well, I was incredibly nervous. I’m not a comedian, but apparently I had a few good jokes. I think the best part was when my dad saw Big the Cat – he went bright red! Embarrassing him with that costume was so funny!

mattmagician
Do you have a funny story from a convention, or a horror story?

Beth

asukaramielI go to Anime Expo in Los Angeles every year with a big group of friends, so we always have tons of stories. I was able to convince a friend of mine to cosplay the Fifth Angel Ramiel from Evangelion with me and it was a really bad costume on purpose, but I refused to take any photos for people without her next to me!! We couldn’t stop laughing all day!

mattmagician
Has there ever been a costume that you’ve started working on but it just couldn’t work out?

Beth

Yup. I attempted to make the gravity-defying red dress that Jessica Rabbit wears in Who Framed Roger Rabbit? but it just wouldn’t stay up without straps. I think that if I were to remake it, I’d try adding boning like in my Morrigan corset.

mattmagician
Anything you want to say to your followers? Any hints at your next costume?

Beth
One of my next cosplays is being chosen by a contest and will be worn at Anime Expo! I have no idea which costume will win – I opened it up to ANYTHING – and some of the entries included characters from League of Legends, Sonic the Hedgehog, Mass Effect, One Piece… and even a Furby.  (Editor’s Note: This contest has actually ended, and Arcade Miss Fortune from League of Legends won!)
In addition to this contest, I’ll be making another new cosplay for Anime Expo, but I haven’t decided which yet. I think it would be really fun to do a character from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventures because the poses are amazing!! So high fashion.

We can’t wait to see photos from that event!
