What We All Need is a Steam Powered Giraffe (Exclusive Interview!)

It’s no secret that we love Steam Powered Giraffe here at Pixlbot, so when we got the chance to talk to the minds behind the bots at Midwest Media Expo 2015, we took it. We sit down and talk about SteamWorld Heist, their upcoming album Vice Quadrant, and more!

Let’s start with questions related to SteamWorld Heist. What was it like working with Image & Form for the music?

David

It was a completely new experience for us, not just because we had never worked on music for a video game before, but we hadn’t ever worked with anyone outside of Steam Powered Giraffe before. We’ve always done everything in-house ourselves.

Working with Image and Form to try and get what they want for their game has been challenging, but rewarding. It’s definitely been a learning experience, which is a good thing for us.  It’s been way different than working on our own studio albums, where obviously the only input is from the people in Steam Powered Giraffe.

Sam

A bit of a dream come true. I knew it was going to be a challenge and it’s great to be able to expand our audience. Personally, I love video games and it’s been a fascinating experiment. Plus, everyone we worked with at Image & Form is super nice. They aren’t paying me to say that!

mattmagician

Was the plan always to release a separate album, roughly around the same time as Vice Quadrant?

Isabella

I’m kind of happy that both albums will be heavily space-themed. What with Interstellar being so popular! 😉

David

When we were brought on to help with the music for SteamWorld Heist, we pushed back our release date for Vice Quadrant so we could focus on both albums simultaneously. The plan so far is to release the album for SteamWorld Heist at the same time the game comes out. The release date for Vice Quadrant will be sometime after that we are thinking.

Sam

Originally we envisioned releasing Vice Quadrant mid year. We’re happy to say it’s now going to be a busy listening year for all SPG fans.

mattmagician

Do you have any personal goals/hopes for SteamWorld Heist’s music? Any particular tracks you really like?

David

I suppose we are all hoping that people who play the game will be turned onto our music and our other albums and the people who already like our music will pick up the game and be turned onto Image and Form and their other games.

Isabella

It’s hard to pick favorites, but I’m pretty proud of our work on all of this and I can’t wait to see people’s reactions!

Sam

I’m particularly grateful to be able to have Hatchworth included on some familiar Steam Powered Giraffe tunes we’ve reworked for SW Heist’s album. Also, being gamers ourselves,  we’re excited at the possibility to be able to apply our trade towards something we can, in turn, partake in.

mattmagician

What sort of games do you each like? I know I’ve seen you play a bit of GTA 5, and heard a bit about Bloodborne, but what else?

Isabella

I’m a big MMO gamer. A lot of World of Warcraft, Trove…I also hit up Diablo 3 sometimes!

David

I definitely play a wide variety of games, from FPS to RPGs to more casual stuff. I find myself enjoying open-world story driven single player games the most like the Mass Effect series and Dragon Age, but I also enjoy cooperative games with friends as well like the Borderlands franchise. Hands down though…Red Dead Redemption is my #1 all time favorite game.

Sam

I’m glad that co-op gaming is making a resurgence. I’ll try anything that has co-op. The band has spent way too much time in Borderlands 2. Also, I love the emergent gameplay that roguelikes provide. I’m currently training to complete a ‘hell run’ in Spelunky. All that being said, I can’t wait to mindlessly maim Nazi’s in the new Wolfenstien DLC.

mattmagician

Hopefully this isn’t the last time you guys will be working on a game, is there anything you’d love to work on next?

David

I think it would be fun to work on music for other games, whether that’s making a complete soundtrack for it, or simply providing a single song.

Sam

We’re hoping that with SteamWorld’s Dig and Heist, the steam powered robot genre of games will take off. We’d have a monopoly on that market!

Isabella

More video game music would be fun, but I think the sky’s the limit as far as we’re concerned.

mattmagician

I imagine so! Onto the Steam Powered Giraffe questions! When you were working on MK III, was the intention to immediately start on Vice Quadrant, or did it just sort of happen?

David

Vice Quadrant, our conceptual outer space/sci-fi album has been an idea Bunny and I have had since we finished our Two-Cent Show album. We wanted to do it right after that album was released, however with the addition of Sam as a robot we thought it would be best to do a less conceptual album and sort of “reintroduce” the robots again.

Sam

Our process is a song by song basis I feel. Each song should be special and I think we’ve amassed a nice collection of tunes for Vice Quadrant so far. That being said,  we’ve written some songs that won’t flow well with Vice Quadrant’s themes and those will probably congeal on another album down the road.

mattmagician

This is a bit of a personal one. You guys are known not only for your music, but for the act itself. It’s always hard to explain the act to friends that I want to introduce to the band. The Walter Robotics Expo is the most recent way other than on YouTube to see the act as it truly is, but with the show itself undergoing certain changes: Have you guys considered a new recorded show, similar to the Live at the Globe of Yesterday’s Tomorrow one from a few years back? Perhaps crowd funded, so that it wouldn’t be a risk? Reward tiers, the whole kitten caboodle?

Isabella

I’m convinced YouTube is the future of our video-related media. I’d like to keep pushing our presence online, and making a compilation DVD of all that new content would be wonderful down the line!

David

The Walter Robotics Expo Video we offer on our website is a great way to see one of our live shows at home, but even though it’s only a few years old, it’s definitely showing it’s age due to the fact that our act is constantly evolving. We’d love to do another live show video in the future. As for another live album, that’s also a possibility. We already have the Walter Robotics Expo show available on iTunes as an audio album, and it’s also included as an audio CD with the Blu-ray combo pack, so yes, when we do another live show video in the future all of that would be possible again.

Sam

I think it’s downright necessary to continue producing those live albums and DVD’s. Not just for newcomers, but also for our diehard fans. But it’s also personally rewarding to create new songs/bits for our act. It’s a rather integral balancing act between the two ideas.

mattmagician

Each album feels different, and each show evolves and changes. How do you guys stay fresh?

David

I think all of us just like keeping things in motion and not letting anything get too stale. We perform quite a few shows a year and we constantly change the songs we perform in our sets and the comedy bits in between. We’ve recently added ballet to the act during a song, as well as a robot giraffe puppet.

Sam

Easy, when we get bored with something, it’s time for a change. So the answer is: a low attention span.

Isabella

Stagnation is just not productive. We don’t want to become bored, so first and foremost- how can we entertain ourselves?

mattmagician

There are now brand new “Steam Powered Giraffe” signs at the movie theater with inspirational quotes under pictures of each of you. What would yours say?

David

“An act so bloated with different crap you’re sure to like something in it!”

Isabella

“Keep On Truckin’!”

Sam

“I refuse to give credence to your hypothetical scenario!”

mattmagician

An anonymous Tumblr user wanted to know ‘how to pronounce Thadeus Becile’. If you could.

Isabella

Thad-E-us Beh-sigh-ill

mattmagician

We had many people asking about Vice Quadrant. From asking for the entire track-list, if there’d be a special edition again, when it’ll be out, and more. Is there a hint at least to when we’ll learn more about the album?

David

I think the only thing we are willing to share now is that we plan to have it out in time for the winter holidays of 2015.

Isabella

It’s a monster of an album, that’s for sure. A little daunting, but I’m excited to get it wrapped up!

Sam

It’ll definitely be worth money.

mattmagician

Is there anything you each want to say to everyone that loves Steam Powered Giraffe, or just anything you’d like to say in general?

David

It’s a pleasure seeing Steam Powered Giraffe fans everywhere we go! They are always kind, friendly, and full of life! When we were starting out, not in a million years could we think our super weird and out-of-left-field act would be loved by so many!

Sam

I want me sweater back Rufus! You know which one.

Isabella

I’m grateful for the fans we’ve made and the support they show us. Really, this is a dream to be a part of. I hope we can continue to entertain audiences for years to come!

mattmagician

Thanks so much for your time, and I can’t wait to hear everything you’ve been working on!
