DRAGON DRAGON, ROCK THE DRAGON, DRAGONBALL XENOVERSE?

At last, Goku and friends return in a brand new game by Bandai Namco in Dragonball Xenoverse! Blasting off on the Playstation 4, Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC, the game combines the best of several Dragonball games to make the greatest entry in the series.

The basic story of the game is that some vile villains, (who were also in the MMO, Dragonball Online!), are messing up the timeline and changing the results of critical battles of the Dragonball Series! Trunks, desperate to save the timeline at all costs, summons Shenron, the wish-granting dragon, and asks him to bring him a warrior that can help save the very fabric of time.

And that’s where you come in. You first create a character from one of five classes, each with different stats and abilities (for instance, Saiyans can turn Super Saiyan and blast enemies away with infinite Ki for a short time, and Namekians can regenerate health), then you customize your looks, your color, and then your name.

DB2And thus begins your epic battles against the Dragonball Z stories’ most infamous villains. Don’t, however, think you can just fly through the story like Goku flew through Piccolo Sr, as you’ll need to train your character and earn better gear and abilities. Luckily, there’s Parallel Quests to help you out. These quests give you many opportunities to not only gain money and experience, but to participate in many “what if” battles, such as teaming up with Freiza to take down the Z-Warriors!

And that’s not the only way to get stronger. You can also become the apprentice of many characters, to learn techniques from and have them comment when you win and lose a match. From Krillin to Vegeta, and Goku to Cell, and even a special newer character you unlock near the end!

Now, when I say “Team up”, I don’t mean with just one person. This time, you can have up to 4 people on the same team, for epic 8 person combat! As you’d expect, there are classic strategies for team play, such as ganging up on one person, and reviving someone who has been KO’d. ¬†And if you don’t feel like teaming up with classic AI controlled characters, you can team up with your friends to take down the hardest challenges. And believe me, they get very, very difficult.

Surprisingly, one of the best parts of this game is the voice acting and music. The voice actors are a DB5perfect blend of classic and Kai voices. They keep Gohan’s new actor, who sounds much more fitting for him, and brought back Android 18’s old one. And the music feels like it came straight out of classic DBZ episodes. And the openings’ remix of Cha-la Head Cha-la blew me away the first time I heard it.

All in all, this game is what the franchise needed, bad. A wonderful game with great multiplayer and even a good story! With all the future DLC coming up, fans of this game are going to be enjoying blasting each other with Kamehameha’s for a long time to come!

Pros:
  • Great gameplay!
  • Multiplayer is a blast and makes the game more replayable.
  • Amazing soundtrack, with awesome songs to Kamehameha your enemies to HFIL to!
Cons:
  • Late game relies on "cheap" difficulty.
  • Grinding can get super tedious and repetitive.
  • No training mode, You're stuck with using local MP and a 2P dummy if you have a second controller lying around.
