What the flip?! We discuss Flipping Death!

Flipping Death was one of the Nindies shown during Nintendo’s recent Indie Showcase for the Nintendo Switch. We reached out to our friends at Zoink games to discuss this insanely interesting title!

You can view the whole interview below!

Thanks for agreeing to this interview! If you could, could you introduce yourself and Flipping Death?

Kevin Andersson

My name is Kevin Andersson and I work as a producer at Zoink. Flipping Death is a puzzle adventure game where you play as Penny who died and got a job temping for Death who goes away on a vacation. Your mission is to help ghosts on The Otherside – the world of the dead – with their offbeat problems so they can finally move on. Penny has the ability to possess and control the living in her previous home town Flatwood Peaks!

mattmagician

We saw you guys in the Nintendo Indies highlight video. What was that like?

Kevin Andersson

It was amazing to be a part of that! Thanks to Nintendo we were able to reach more people who now are aware of Flipping Death. We still go back to the trailer and read all the wonderful comments which puts a smile on our faces!

mattmagician

Did the gameplay come first, or the story concept?

Kevin Andersson

Right after Stick it to the man (a few months before I started working at Zoink) they began working on another prototype which then turned into Flipping Death, but back then I think there was only an idea of two sides and the ability to possess the living to start with. The story always plays a huge part in our games so I believe that there was always some sort of idea there to begin with.

mattmagician

A fair amount of people have noticed similarities between Flipping Death and Tim Burton films. Is this intentional?

Kevin Andersson

I can’t speak for Klaus (Creative Director) on this but I know that he’s a big fan of Tim Burton so I wouldn’t be surprised if some of his work throughout the years have been inspired by Tim in some way.

mattmagician

What was the inspiration for Flipping Death?

Kevin Andersson

One of the inspirations are The Simpsons, we want to create a town with character that you will recognize throughout the game. I believe that we draw inspiration from our previous games and what we’ve learned from them, Tim Burton’s work and also Adventure Time since we’re working with Ryan North just as we did on Stick it to The Man.

mattmagician

All of the voice acting sounds pretty good, how did you guys go about finding voice talent?

Kevin Andersson

Back when we made Stick it to the man and Zombie Vikings we had a lot of auditions and now for this game we’ve mostly used the same actors because they’re just amazing. We have some new ones as well in our cast and might sometime ask our community for help!

mattmagician

What’s something we don’t know about the game that you can share today?

Kevin Andersson

One character that’s not visible in the trailer is a tennis player and I can tell you that it feels really good to hit flying tennis balls. See other characters react when getting hit is also a lot of fun!

mattmagician

Zoink is given complete financial freedom and creative freedom. What game would you make?

Kevin Andersson

I think that we would make games that are pretty similar to Stick it to The Man and Flipping Death since we enjoy making games with a great amount of different quirky characters.

mattmagician

Anything you want to say to fans that are reading this?

Kevin Andersson

We really hope that you’re excited for this game and fans of Stick it to The Man should keep their eyes on Flipping Death! We also want to thank everyone that supports us and what we do, event the smallest tweet means a lot to us!

mattmagician

Thanks again for speaking with us! If you haven’t already, you should follow Zoink Games on Twitter and make sure to tell them how excited you are!
