We get stuck with DJ Stuck of 2D6 Fame!

2D6 has a KickStarter going on, and we wanted to talk to them before Colossalcon. So BAM. We did it. We get things done.
Lets just get started before we embarrass ourselves.

This interview DOES contain a bit of harsh language, so be warned!

Danley

First off, for those who are not familiar with you.. can you introduce yourself?

DJ Stuck

Hi! I’m DJ Stuck Down A Mineshaft With A Broken Leg, one-fourth of the Ohio nerdcore duo 2d6! We write and sing songs! Cliff B is the other three-fourths of the group. (That is a joke because he is fat.)

Danley

How did you guys decide to form the group 2D6? And any special reasoning for the name?

DJ Stuck

Yeah, Cliff B was writing songs and rapping for a few years before me…probably in 2007/2008 or so. We had both been fans of nerdcore since MC Frontalot, great grandaddy of nerdcore, debuted on SongFight! back in 2001, so we were well-steeped in the genre. I decided I wanted to join in on a track with him, so I bought him food at a Denny’s and literally forced him to write lyrics with me. That resulted in a song we both enjoyed so much that we decided to write more together! We chose 2d6 because we’re geeks: 2d6 in gamer parlance means 2 6-sided dice. In high school, we always gamed on a homebrew 3d6 system, so we figured we’d eventually find another member and be 3d6. Obviously, that hasn’t happened.
(Oh god, sidenote, even though this answer is way too long already: we eventually discovered there WAS another band named 3d6, a nerdy punk band in Las Vegas! We’ve since become friends: Cliff has appeared on one of their songs, and they’ve covered one of ours. Check ’em out!: http://www.3d6band.com/)

Danley

Why did you guys do nerdcore rap? Could you ever see yourselves doing any other genre of music?

DJ Stuck

The simple reason is twofold: 1) Our primary identity in life is “geek,” and we think, talk, and breathe nerdy stuff. It would be difficult to write about ennui and faire beaucoup de mal and pain perdu like a real band. Actually, I’d love to write about pain perdu. Song idea! 2) Rap requires virtually zero musical skill.
Cliff was a choir geek in high school, and he actually has written more soulful stuff on his solo CDs, though I think we both agree that the comedy rap thing is way more fun.

Danley

With album titles such as “Hey Fartface,” and “Judge Tardd II: Make Yo’ Gravy” and such songs such as “I WANNA KNOW WHO PUT FUCKING COOKIES IN MY BED RIGHT NOW”, “Applejack Nutsack”, “Homeward Bound Is The Story Of Some Dumb Animals Who Should Have Stayed Lost”.. how do you guys come up with these names?

DJ Stuck

Basically, when we hear something funny in our everyday lives, I write a note of it in my phone and we keep this huge list of potential song titles. Right now, song titles chilling in my phone include “Put A Leaf On Your Dick, Smash An Egg On Your Crotch,” and “Vegemite Thunder,” among many others. You’re about to get some EXCLUSIVE INSIDER INFO!!: Judge Tardd II was named by a Kickstarter backer from our last campaign. You could have the same privilege by giving us dollars! Ask me about that, Pixlbot machine!

Danley

Fine! You guys are currently doing a kickstarter for your newest album and it’s currently funded and trying to reach some awesome stretch goals… anything you guys doing differently or new with this album? Anything fans should be looking forward to?

DJ Stuck

We always try to take some leaps with our albums in different ways, but some of them are little leaps. We’ll still be doing the geek stuff, but we’re trying new things. This album has a song about Star Wars and ponies, which are fandoms we’ve never covered. It’s got a guest verse from Satellite High, which is so hype it’s unbelievable. It’s got a track with a real live guitar solo in it, which is borderline silly for a nerdcore rap group. It’s got our first semi-earnest song about how incredible conventions are. So we’re taking it to different places right now, and seeing what people dig and want more of and what they dislike for the future.

Danley

Any special memories or interesting stories about any shows? What has been your favorite convention to attend so far?

mattmagician

Oh man, conventions. We used to do a lot of local Canton/Youngstown shows, and people would be so confused and bewildered. So we’ve scaled back a lot to doing conventions or opening for nerdy bands coming through town. THAT’S been something special…to hear your name out of the mouth of Adam Warrock or Panther from The Protomen of Peelander-Yellow is almost heart-stopping in its incredulity. These are people I’ve idolized, and they’re thanking us for putting on a fantastic opening for them! It’s unbelievable.
Our favorite convention…that’s a great question. I think it might have been Con on the Cob, a gaming convention in Hudson, OH. The crowd there was unbelievable. They packed our concert room to standing-room-only, screamed like maniacs after every song, and wouldn’t let us go until we gave them an encore (and even asked for a second one, which we were prepared to give, until the con shut us down, haha). But we love all cons! Everyone is so incredibly friendly.

Danley

If you guys could attend any convention to perform at that you haven’t done yet.. what would it be?

DJ Stuck

As for cons I’d love to go to, there are a few. Unrealistically? I’ve gone to Otakon for 15 years now, since 2000. I would kill to play at Otakon. But it’s the biggest anime con on the east coast, and in a lot of ways, we’re still little fish in a big pond. Realistically, we would LOVE to play at Youmacon. That might be the dream right now. I’ve heard a lot of good things…
Aw, but hell. You got a convention? We’ll play it. Doesn’t matter how big or small. We just love playing cons.

Danley

Is there anything else 2D6 is currently working on as a group or even a separate project?

DJ Stuck

Cliff is actually working on his…fifth? Sixth? solo album, Dadstache. It’s coming out in the fall, I think. As for me? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Boy, I wish those stretch goals on the Kickstarter would unlock…

Danley

Is there anything else you guys would like to mention or plug?

DJ Stuck

I’d like to plug French’s Mustard. Since I’m speaking for Cliff, he’d like to plug his big dumb mouth.

Danley

Awesome, thanks so much guys! CLICK HERE to KickStart them, and HERE to check them out. Like their FaceBook HERE.
